The King George V-class battleships were the most modern British battleships in commission during the Second World War. Five ships of this class were built: HMS King George V (commissioned 1940), HMS Prince of Wales (1941), HMS Duke of York (1941), HMS Anson (1942) and HMS Howe (1942).

King George V hospital, opened in 1941, was designed in the Inter-War International Art Moderne style by prominent Sydney architects Stephenson & Turner. Of an especially innovative design, the building was awarded the 1941 Sulman Medal for Public Architecture by the Royal Australian Institute of Architects (NSW Chapter).

On 15 July 1912, Dr Wilfred Grenfell officially opened the King George V Seamen's Institute in St John's. Its primary purpose was to provide "wholesome" temporary accommodations for fishermen, sealers, and naval reservists visiting St. John's and the "daughters of fishermen and seamen" who came to the city for work.

The restored, seven-storey King George V building reflects the site's rich history and is complemented by a landscape design that restores the neighbouring square, designed by James Gibbs in the 1730s, to its former glory.

King V Memorial, Canberra
The King George V was launched by King George VI on 21 February 1939 and following fitting-out and sea trials, she was commissioned into the Royal Navy on 1 October 1940. She was assigned to the Home Fleet at Scapa Flow, and this remained her principal base until 1944.
